How CollegeCompass Began

CollegeCompass was born from a simple observation: the students who need college planning help the most often have the least access to quality guidance.

The idea for CollegeCompass emerged from conversations with high school students and families who felt overwhelmed by the college application process. Despite having strong academic records and clear ambitions, many students struggled to navigate the complex landscape of college admissions, financial aid, and strategic planning.

Traditional college counseling, while valuable, often comes with significant limitations. School counselors, despite their dedication and expertise, frequently manage caseloads of hundreds of students, making individualized attention challenging. Private college consultants, while offering personalized service, often charge thousands of dollars, putting their services out of reach for many families.

We recognized that artificial intelligence could bridge this gap by providing personalized, expert-level guidance at scale. By combining machine learning algorithms with comprehensive college admissions data, we could create an intelligent system that understands each student's unique profile and provides tailored recommendations that evolve with their progress.

The Values That Guide Us

Accessibility First

We believe that zip code, school resources, or family income should never determine a student's access to quality college planning guidance. Every feature we build and every decision we make is evaluated through the lens of accessibility and inclusivity.

Student-Centered Design

Students are at the center of everything we do. We design our platform based on how students actually live and learn, not how adults think they should. This means mobile-first experiences, intuitive interfaces, and features that fit naturally into busy student lives.

Data-Driven Insights

Our recommendations are grounded in comprehensive data analysis and evidence-based strategies. We continuously analyze admissions trends, student outcomes, and success patterns to ensure our guidance reflects current realities and best practices.

Transparency and Trust

We believe students and families deserve to understand how our recommendations are generated and what data informs our insights. We're committed to transparency in our algorithms, clear communication about our methods, and honest guidance about college admissions realities.

Continuous Innovation

The college admissions landscape is constantly evolving, and our platform must evolve with it. We're committed to continuous improvement, incorporating new research, adapting to changing admissions practices, and expanding our capabilities to better serve student needs.

Founder & CEO

• 10 years in higher education

• Fortune 500 product experience

• Leadership roles at USAA, First American & Fidelity National Financial

When my high school daughter started asking questions about college planning, I thought I had it covered. After all, who could be more prepared than someone who spent 10 years working in higher education alumni and development offices, with a mother who dedicated her entire career to university work in communications and as a Dean of Students?

I quickly discovered just how wrong I was.

The college planning landscape had transformed dramatically in the 20 years since I was last directly involved in higher education. What used to be a straightforward process had become an overwhelming maze of information, deadlines, and decisions that left even experienced families feeling lost and stressed.

Despite our family's deep connections to higher education, we found ourselves struggling with the same challenges I now hear from parents and students everywhere: How do you create a balanced college list? When should you really start test prep? What actually matters in college admissions today? How do you navigate financial aid and merit scholarships strategically?

The existing resources either provided generic information that didn't apply to our specific situation or required expensive private counseling that felt unnecessary given our educational background. There had to be a better way.

Drawing on my experience in product management and marketing at Fortune 500 companies like USAA, First American, and Fidelity National Financial, along with leadership roles at some of the fastest-growing mortgage companies in the country, I began approaching college planning like a product problem: How do you deliver personalized, actionable guidance at scale?

"The answer became CollegeCompass—an AI-powered platform that provides every student with the kind of individualized college planning support that was previously only available through expensive private counseling."

My goal isn't to replace human counselors or eliminate the personal aspects of college planning. It's to ensure that every student, regardless of their family's resources or their school's counseling capacity, has access to intelligent guidance that adapts to their unique goals, timeline, and circumstances.

Because I've learned that college planning expertise isn't about having connections in higher education—it's about having the right information, at the right time, presented in a way that helps families make confident decisions about one of the most important investments in a young person's future.
